Theyyam : An Artist’s Journey

Theyyam is an ancient ritualistic art form that originates from the northern regions of Kerala, blending performance, mythology, and religious devotion. It is more than just a performance—it is a transformation where the performer, through elaborate makeup, costumes, and dance, embodies a deity for the duration of the act. Rooted in folklore and local traditions, Theyyam is performed as a form of worship, offering a unique connection between the divine and the human world.

In this gallery, I’ve captured the story of Mukesh Paniker, a Theyyam artist who has been practicing this sacred art since the age of 6. Rather than showcasing the grandeur of the performance itself, I wanted to document the unseen labor and dedication that go into it. Mukesh’s journey is one of devotion and discipline, involving hours of meticulous preparation, from applying layers of traditional makeup to enduring the physical strain of his elaborate costume. Through these images, I’ve focused on the quieter moments of reflection and the artistry that transforms him into a divine figure. This gallery offers a glimpse into the immense hard work that fuels the art of Theyyam, as seen through the eyes of an artist who lives it.

I have divided the gallery into two parts. Part 1 signifies his first half of his act of Kanda Karnan and the second act his final and most dramatic part of the act
