The Padaikatti Amman festival is one of the most unique festivals that is observed in the Valangaiman Amman temple near Kumbakonam. Every temple where a unique way of fulfilling prayers often has an oral history that can be traced to hundreds of years back. A Brahmin couple is believed to have left a child at the premises of the temple. A family near the temple took care of the child. As fate has it, the child passed away due to small pox and they buried her behind the temple with a small tomb and started offering prayers. Over a period of time people started praying to the tomb to cure them of ailment and when their wish was fulfilled would come to the temple perform last rites and be reborn again.
